A Great Day of Sailing for 2 US12s and 2 Santa Barbaras

A Santa Barbara is a very majestic boat on the water.
Our frequent spectator was back.
The four Footys we sailed did not do well in weeds either.

The Solings Gather
Last week, with more than twenty boats participating in an all-in regatta, we found it a little tough to score, so for the August 3 regatta, the fleet was split by class. The winds were light so only ten races were completed, or five for each class. This regatta was much more relaxed, giving sailors time to rest their control arms and make adjustments, and it certainly was easier for our dedicated scorekeeper, Karen Enos. We do need to work on class balance, however. The Master Class had nine skippers while the Sailor Class had fourteen.

Tim Wright reviewed some rules and demonstrated proper mark rounding with the help of Genie Ware.

We are pleased that some of our newer skippers are working their way up the fleet. Tom Barstow posted a win; John Barstow, Genie Ware, and Jack Minahan placed second in a race; while Clint Wolcott took a third. And hallelujah! Al Stevens finally posted a win in Race Four!

A special thanks to Paul Wallace’s donation of a pair of paddles for the rescue boat to use when needed.

Amazingly, the Sailor Class managed a well behaved start also. Well done! Keep it up.

Out on the Water
The top five in the Sailor Class this week were led by Steve Leker in first and Paul McBride second. Anthony Quinn was third after a sail change, Joel Nelson and Genie Ware posted fourth, and Jack Minahan held on for the fifth place.

The Master Class had Tim Wright at the front of the pack with Dan Masessa in second, and Rick Gates third. Denis Boisvert, after struggling for a couple of weeks, moved up to fourth, and the proverbial sixth place finisher, Mark Whitehead, moved up one notch to fifth.

The US12s Shine on a Gray Day
August 5 was a very good day for the US12 fleet. Because it was gently raining when we arrived, we took a while to decide if we would sail at all. The rain eased, but we got a late start at 1:30 p.m. Although it looked like it would rain the rest of the time, it held off. The wind came down the bay from the north, so we sailed the opposite direction, starting left to right. The wind was great for the entire afternoon and shifted from side to side down the bay. The six boats managed to squeeze in twelve races by 3:00. It was a very pleasant and exciting afternoon.

Kurt Clason launched his boat in the drizzle making the most of his limited sailing time this season.

The racing in the US12 fleet is becoming more level, with everyone finishing at least once in second place. Finishes were tight, which made the wind shifts important. Those who chose correctly got ahead. Once again, Tim Wright chose well, and finished atop the fleet with ten wins. Jim Opie came in second, getting the other two first-place finishes. Paul McBride had three seconds and two thirds, coming in third for the day. John Simms had three seconds and three thirds, but was on the wrong side of the wind shifts in some of the other races. He came in fourth for the day. Our relative newcomers, Kurt Clason and Bruce Wilhelm, had their moments up front while they continue to learn the finer points of racing. They came in fifth and sixth overall.

The day was great for sailing, and everyone enjoyed themselves. Thanks to our scorekeeper, B. B. Wright, who stuck it out in the drizzle and stayed to score for us. It was a memorable day as the weather let up just enough to have a good afternoon of sailing.
