In Memory of Ellen A. Koehler
1946 – 2021

Those who live in the hearts of loved ones left behind never really die — like a song that lingers when the music is playing no more. Or the fragrance that stays in the air where a flower has blossomed before. Like a star that continues to glow long after the breaking of dawn. The ones we have loved remain with us still, as the beautiful memories go on.

The Back Bay Skippers will long remember Ellen Koehler. They’ll never forget her willingness to volunteer – nor the bark of her reprimand as scorekeeper when a sailor crossed the starting line too soon. With her keen eyes focused on that invisible alignment, her gentle voice transformed to one of authority when skippers jockeying for position at the start failed to round the offset mark. That same verbal clout cleared the finish line of dawdling yachts so those in their wake had room to complete the course. Victims acknowledged with a chuckle, however, her gift of banter. Born in the Philadelphia area on May 4, 1946, it certainly was a coincidence and perhaps a sign of things to come that Ellen’s first occupation was sail maker.

The Soling Fleet Increases
Participant numbers in the Soling fleet are approaching summer levels. The July 6 regatta brought out twenty boats and the fleet was split for the first time this season. The Master Class went out first and the Sailor Class one minute later, the winds holding well enough for us to complete ten races.

In the first race it looked as though the Masters were asleep as the Sailors charged the line. That’s how fickle the winds of Back Bay traditionally are, but the Masters soon took off while the Sailors slowed.

The interesting feature of the split fleet is the Sailor Class had the right of way coming off the line so the Master fleet played dodgem heading for the downwind mark.

Heading to the Finish Line

This was the first regatta for Ken Gerber’s new Vac-U-Boat Soling. Ken placed sixth in the Sailor Class — not a bad showing for his first time out. Congratulations, Ken!

A thank-you goes out to Bill Quayle for producing the masts to be used in this year’s Soling Building Class. The strong and very lightweight masts (one gram) enhance the Soling performance. Thanks, Bill!

Out on the Water
After a year’s absence, Joel Nelson is coming into his own, taking this week’s very competitive regatta in the Sailor Class. The Barstow brothers took the next two positions with Tom in second and John in third. Rounding out the top five were Steve Leker in fourth and Bruce Brown in fifth. Of note, Genie Ware pulled off a great second-place finish in Race One.

Leading the Master Class was Tim Wright, followed by Don Cundy, Al Posnack, Tim Brand, and Dan Masessa in a close and tough competition.

US12 Sailing
Don Cundy assumed the role of fleet captain this week for the US12s. Diane LaBella graciously filled in as scorekeeper while Don Opie kept everyone on the straight and narrow. The five skippers who launched were John Simms, Don Cundy, Jim Opie, Bob Brennan, and Bruce Wilhelm, finishing in that order. From all reports, it was a great day of sailing.

Sailboats are fun to watch.

Lily Pond
The buoys at Lily Pond in Gilford were set on June 30, and sailing will resume on Sunday, July 11, from 9 AM to 12 noon.

Join the Fun
The season is underway so folks are encouraged to stop by on Tuesday and Thursday at 1 PM to watch the action (weather permitting, of course), or Wednesday if Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate on Tuesday or Thursday. Make sure you have your camera at the ready.
