They’re Back!
There might have been a lot of activity on Back Bay or perhaps it was the hot weather, but for whatever the reason, our June 29 regatta was plagued by weeds. Six weed calls showed up on the score sheet, but we’re sure that more just weren’t recorded. The commodore’s Number 12 had the highest tally with four of the six calls – weeds must be attracted to blue boats! The US12s slide right through them, but the Solings get stopped dead in the water. Perhaps a new award should be crafted in the workshop for most weeds!

The winds held reasonably steady with only a few lulls. It certainly was hot, but everyone was prepared with extra water. The Soling fleet of sixteen skippers completed ten all-in races, but as more snowbirds return for the season and our numbers increase, we might be splitting the fleet soon.

A thank-you goes out to Steve Leker who showed up with a new pair of oarlocks for the rescue boat — the “eye” type that don’t let oars pop out. Thank you, Steve! They’ll save everyone aggravation.

Out on the Water
The Sailor Class had a tie at the top with Bruce Brown and Steve Leker sharing the honors. Jack Minahan was all alone in second place with Paul McBride, Anthony Quinn, and Al Stevens sharing third place.

In the Master Class, Tim Wright rose to the top of the heap. There were no ties in this class. Don Cundy for the second week in a row sailed into the second slot, and in his wake was Dan Masessa in third, Jay Burns in fourth, and Al Posnack in fifth.

US12 Sailing
The sailing for the US12s at Back Bay on July 1 was epic. We managed to get fifteen races in, and had eight boats whose skippers enjoyed the cooler temps and good winds. There are always wind shifts on Back Bay, which keeps things interesting, but today the wind speed was never too light and never too strong. The races went quickly, and it was a great afternoon of sailing.

US12 Skippers

Tim Wright was hard to beat today, although John Simms managed a couple of times. John came in second for the day with Don Cundy close behind in third and Jim Opie in fourth. Rick Parent and Bruce Wilhelm were hundredths apart in fifth and sixth with Bob Brennan and Paul McBride rounding out the fleet. Paul had some trouble with his boat today but displayed persistence and determination, fixing a serious issue then continuing to race and improving his finishes.

The US12 sailors have a great time every Thursday afternoon, and hope to have more sailors as the season really gets going. Come down and watch. It’s a pleasant way to spend a summer afternoon.
